A handcrafted cutting or charcuterie board isn’t just a kitchen tool—it’s a piece of functional art. With a little regular care, your Carraway Creations board will stay beautiful, food-safe, and ready for years of memorable gatherings. Here’s everything you need to know:
1. Clean Gently, Never Soak
After each use: Wipe your board with a damp cloth or wash with mild soap and warm water.
Never soak: Don’t submerge your board or leave it in standing water—this can cause warping and cracks.
Dry promptly: Pat dry with a towel and stand upright to air dry fully.
2. Disinfect Naturally
For a quick refresh, sprinkle coarse salt or baking soda on the surface. Rub gently with a halved lemon, then rinse and dry.
This method keeps your board fresh and odor-free without harsh chemicals.
3. Oil Regularly for Longevity
Why oil? Oiling protects against drying, cracking, and stains.
What to use: We recommend Odies Oil or Walrus Oil (tung oil or cutting board oil)—the same finishes we use in our shop.
How often: Once a month, or whenever the board looks dry or loses its sheen.
How to apply: Wipe a generous layer of oil onto all surfaces. Let it soak in for at least 15 minutes, then buff off the excess with a clean cloth.
4. Deep Conditioning: Extra TLC
For extra protection, especially after heavy use or deep cleaning, use a board butter or wax (a blend of oil and beeswax) for a silky, water-resistant finish.
5. Avoid These Common Mistakes
Dishwasher danger: Never put your board in the dishwasher.
No harsh chemicals: Avoid bleach or abrasive cleaners.
Extreme temps: Keep away from direct sunlight, stove tops, or radiators to prevent warping.
6. Bonus: Maintaining That “Wow” Factor
For engraved or inlaid boards, follow the same care routine. If you notice buildup in engraved areas, use a soft brush to gently clean.
If your board develops small scratches, a light sanding with fine-grit sandpaper and a fresh coat of oil can restore its surface.
7. When to Re-Oil or Refurbish
If water doesn’t bead on the surface, it’s time to re-oil.
